Thermal Imaging Analysis
Scientific testing reveals the shocking truth on heat loss going through single pane windows in Winter.
"4° outside and 16° inside is normal with no heating ... Our house is on a hill exposed on all sides to cold winds, yet it’s very comfortable ... we are delighted with the windows”.
J.D. - Ballarat
You may be familiar with Thermal Imaging, or Thermography. It is a type of infrared scientific imaging that detects radiated heat. In the image below, you can see two Antarctic seals producing heat (red) in their icy (blue through to purple) surroundings.
Let's now look at a thermographic photograph of a typical home in Winter … As you can see, the windows are glowing red. What this shows so graphically, is that much of the heat being produced in this home, is simply being lost through the single pane windows.
Insulated walls and single glazed windows
And another …

Windows double glazed - but heat leaks out from uninsulated walls
Look at the areas around the windows which are glowing red. In this case, much of the heat being produced in this home, is simply being lost through the surrounding walls. BOTH these cases provide a compelling case for being energy wise, and insulating your home against heat loss. (Or indeed heat gain in summer.).
What about YOUR home?
If you have single pane window, this IS happening in your home. You need to know there is virtually no insulation value in a single glazed sheet of glass... which means your heat loss in Winter is much much worse than even an uninsulated wall. As one of our clients put it before she put in CertainTeed Double Glazed windows, “We were shocked to realise we’d been heating the entire neighbourhood, and over all those years, it was costing us a small fortune!”
So the answer...
Insulate your walls, ceilings, windows, doors and timber floors - don't leave any gaps.
To be a bit more specific…
Remember how cold it is sitting next to an unprotected single glazed window in Winter? The heat is stripped off your body and you shiver and move away from the window. So in Winter, except for the furniture, this half metre of space in front of your windows in unusable and it might represent $10,000 of building costs!
Now is the time to stop the loss of heat, and to SAVE on your energy bills, and help save on greenhouse gases.
